The Tonda di Calabria Bio organic round variety Calabrian hazelnut is formally recognized by the Tasting Panel of Italian Hazelnuts, and is highly appreciated for its unique characteristics of taste and aroma, as well as its special lipid composition, higher concentration of oleic acid, and lower concentration of linoleic acid, which favours the shelf life of the nut.

In terms of hazelnuts, Italy is the first leading producer in Europe, and the second in the world. Of all the varieties, the most popular are those protected by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) labels. Among the Italian regions experiencing most growth in the sector is that of Tonda di Calabria, with its approximately 700 hectares of hazelnut groves.
